CLIENT (the person or organisation the work is done for)

Appoint a Principal Designer (PD) and Principal Contractor (PC) — in writingProvide pre-construction information to designers and contractorsEnsure adequate welfare facilitiesAllow adequate time and resources for the projectEnsure the construction phase plan is in place before work starts

PRINCIPAL DESIGNER (PD) (leads on pre-construction H&S)

Plan, manage, monitor, and coordinate pre-construction health and safetyHelp the client provide pre-construction informationIdentify, eliminate, and reduce risks during designPrepare and update the Health and Safety FileCoordinate with the Principal Contractor

PRINCIPAL CONTRACTOR (PC) (leads on construction phase H&S)

Plan, manage, monitor, and coordinate the construction phaseProduce the Construction Phase Plan before work startsControl the site — only authorised persons on siteCoordinate and manage all contractorsEnsure suitable welfare facilitiesProvide site induction for all workers

DESIGNER (anyone who designs — architect, engineer, specifier)

Eliminate foreseeable risks in the design where possibleReduce risks that cannot be eliminatedProvide information about remaining risks to other duty holders

CONTRACTOR (anyone carrying out construction work)

Plan and manage own work safelyFollow the site rules set by the PCCooperate with the PC and other contractorsReport anything unsafeProvide information for the Health and Safety File

Domestic Projects (Homeowner as Client)

On domestic jobs with only one contractor, most client duties transfer automatically to that contractor.
