What To Ask Your Broker at Renewal

Public Liability

Is defective workmanship excluded or covered? Is pollution/contamination covered (even gradual)? Is asbestos excluded entirely? Are labour-only subbies covered under my EL or their own? What is the excess on PL claims? Does cover extend to work outside the UK?

Employers' Liability

Minimum £5m cover confirmed? All workers (including casual/temporary) declared? Labour-only subcontractors — are they on EL or PL?

Tools & Equipment

What is the unattended van rule? (time limit, visibility) Is overnight cover conditional on specific locks/security? New-for-old replacement or market value? Is there a single-item limit? Are hired-in tools covered?

Van / Vehicle

Correct use class declared? (carriage of own goods, etc.) Overloading clause — what happens if over GVW? EV-specific recovery cover if applicable? Is sign-writing/livery covered under accidental damage?

Professional Indemnity (if applicable)

What counts as "professional services" under the policy? Known issues/circumstances duty — what must I disclose? Run-off cover if I stop trading?

General — Ask Every Time

All trades and activities I do are declared? Turnover figure is correct and up to date? All claims and incidents reported (even if not claimed)? Any warranty or exclusion changes from last year?
