First Aid on Site — Construction

Know who your first aiders are and where the first aid kit is BEFORE you need them.
Fall from Height
- 1.Do NOT move the casualty (possible spinal injury)
- 2.Call 999 immediately
- 3.Keep them warm with a blanket or jacket
- 4.Monitor breathing — be ready to start CPR
- 5.Keep bystanders back
Electric Shock
- 1.Do NOT touch the casualty if still in contact with the source
- 2.Isolate the power at the source if safe to do so
- 3.Call 999 immediately
- 4.Start CPR if not breathing (once clear of source)
- 5.Treat any burns after the shock is dealt with
Crush Injury
- 1.Call 999 immediately — say "crush injury"
- 2.Do NOT release the crush until paramedics arrive (crush syndrome)
- 3.Keep talking to the casualty — keep them calm
- 4.Keep them warm
- 5.Monitor breathing
Severe Bleeding
- 1.Apply direct pressure with a clean pad or cloth
- 2.Elevate the injured area if possible
- 3.Call 999
- 4.Do NOT remove embedded objects — press around them
- 5.Keep pressing until help arrives
Amputation
- 1.Call 999 immediately
- 2.Apply direct pressure to the stump
- 3.Wrap severed part in damp clean cloth
- 4.Place wrapped part in plastic bag, then on ice
- 5.Send it with the patient to hospital
Burns
- 1.Cool with clean running water for 20 minutes
- 2.Do NOT remove clothing stuck to the burn
- 3.Cover loosely with cling film (lengthways)
- 4.Call 999 for serious burns (larger than a hand, face/neck/joints)
- 5.Do NOT apply creams, butter, or ice
Eye Injury (Cement / Chemicals)
- 1.Irrigate with clean running water for 20+ minutes
- 2.Hold the eyelid open — flush inner corner outward
- 3.Call 999 or 111
- 4.Do NOT rub the eye
- 5.Note what substance was involved — take SDS to hospital
