Are you being paid the right apprentice rate? Check in 30 seconds.
For UK apprentices. First-years and beyond. Covers the apprentice rate, 19+ rules and when you move off the apprentice minimum.
Sound familiar?
- “My boss says first-year apprentices always get paid this much, but I don't know if that's true.”
- “I turned 19 six months ago and I'm still on the apprentice rate. Is that right?”
- “I'm in my second year but my pay hasn't gone up.”
- “I'm doing the same work as a labourer on a higher rate. Is that legal?”
What this tool does
Compares your apprentice hourly rate against the statutory minimum for your age and year of apprenticeship. It flags the specific point at which you should have moved up to a higher band.
If they turn 19 during their first year, the apprentice rate still applies until the first year ends.
If you're not sure, check their apprenticeship agreement or training provider paperwork.
What the law actually says
- •The apprentice rate only applies to under-19s, or to anyone in the first year of their apprenticeship regardless of age. After that, the age-based National Minimum Wage kicks in.
- •Many apprentices are underpaid because employers don't update rates at the 12-month mark or on a birthday.
- •If your employer has underpaid you, HMRC can make them pay back every penny owed.
