    You can absolutely turn military tickets into civilian cards, but nothing auto-magically converts, you still have to do the CSCS/plant/NVQ bits. The win is using your forces quals and ELCAS so you're not starting from scratch or paying full whack.

    Quick rule of thumb: translate your forces training into NVQ-level competence, then use that to get the right cards: BuildForce sits in the middle and helps you pick the right line instead of guessing.


    1. How mapping works

    There isn't one magic national "forces-to-construction" converter. Instead, you pull a few levers:

    • BuildForce · they sit down with you, look at your trade, rank and quals, and map that against real construction roles and NVQs.
    • Awarding bodies (NOCN, others): they use Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) so your military training and logbooks can count towards an NVQ, instead of you re-proving everything from zero.
    • CSCS/CPCS schemes · they don't care you were in; they care what NVQ/qualification you have now and that you've passed the right tests.
    • ELCAS · pays a big chunk of your bridging courses (NVQs, supervision/management quals, electrical training), so you keep more of your resettlement cash.

    2. ELCAS, funding your bridging courses

    You can usually claim three ELCAS payments, one per financial year:

    You can use that on:

    • Level 3+ NVQs (for example, Construction Contracting Operations, Site Supervision, Site Management).
    • Electrical/mechanical training with approved providers.
    • Higher-level health & safety / management quals (that then underpin Gold/Black CSCS cards).

    You book via the ELCAS portal; the training provider needs an ELCAS number and you need to do the claim paperwork before the course starts.


    3. CSCS cards, what military quals can unlock

    CSCS only cares about civilian-recognised qualifications, but your forces background can shorten the route.

    Typical paths

    There's no blanket ex-forces fast-track card, but if BuildForce or a training provider can map your military course to an NVQ, you can often jump straight to Blue/Gold/Black once the RPL is done and signed off.


    4. CPCS / plant, where RE & RLC plant skills pay off

    CPCS doesn't auto-convert military licences, but your hands-on experience means you usually:

    • Smash the practical tests quickly.
    • Need less paid seat time to be test-ready.
    • Are good candidates for Red Trained Operator cards on multiple categories.

    Standard CPCS route

    1. Do the relevant CPCS theory & practical testsRed Trained Operator card (2 years).
    2. Register on the matching NVQ while you're working.
    3. Complete NVQ → upgrade to Blue Competent Operator (5 years).

    Your RE/RLC operator course reports and logbooks can be used as evidence in the NVQ via RPL, so you're not rebuilding your portfolio from scratch.


    5. Example mappings, who lines up with what

    This is shorthand, not a perfect one-to-one, but it gives you the shape of it:

    6. How to actually move your quals across (in order)

    Step 1, Get your paperwork together

    Course reports, trade certs, logbooks, any civilian quals you did in service.

    Step 2, Talk to BuildForce (and/or an ex-forces training provider)

    Let them map your experience against specific NVQs and CSCS levels, not "construction in general".

    Step 3, Use ELCAS on the right course

    Aim your first claim at a Level 3+ NVQ or supervision/management course that actually moves your card level, not a random short course.

    Step 4, Register for the NVQ with RPL built in

    Ask the centre up front how they handle prior learning from military service. Good ones will tailor the evidence plan so you're topping up, not rewriting your career.

    Step 5, Sort your HS&E test and CSCS application

    Once the NVQ is underway or done, hit the CITB test and apply for the right CSCS card as soon as the awarding body confirms your units or full award.

    Step 6, For plant, slot CPCS around that

    Book CPCS training/tests on the kit you actually want to drive, push your military tickets as evidence for shorter training, then get on with the NVQ to turn Red into Blue.
